The GasFindIR LW detects SF6 (Sulphur Hexafluoride), a gas used as at electric power plants as an insulator in circuit breakers and switchgear. SF6 is also used in magnesium production and semiconductor manufacturing. The camera enables inspectors and consultants at utilities or in manufacturing to proactively diagnose leaks of Sulfur Hexafluoride. The gas is expensive and harmful to the environment: it remains in the atmosphere for thousands of years and consequently has a 24,000-time higher global warming potential than CO2 emissions -- more than any other greenhouse gas.

The GasFindIR LW camera allows utility corporations, service companies and other organizations to search for SF6 leaks across substation equipment at safe distances without the need to interrupt power production. Professionals can scan more equipment in less time, while imagery from affected areas can easily be documented.
The GasFindIR LW camera takes advantage of a spectral filter that is optimized to detect SF6, ammonia and some twenty other gases. The camera’s sensitivity is <35mK when FLIR’s adaptive temporal filter is engaged. The GasFindIR LW weighs only 2.4 kg and is powered by a camcorder battery.
The GasFindIR LW camera delivers real-time thermal imagery of gas leaks, visualized in black or white smoke. Large areas can be scanned from the ground. The GasFindIR LW camera can be linked to a Personal Video Recorder and displayed on a standard TV monitor. This makes documenting and reporting of affected areas easy and efficient for utility companies.
